Beyond the Ivory Tower

Learn to write short pieces, for wide audiences, about the big questions.

With generous support from the John Templeton Foundation, Beyond the Ivory Tower: The Public Scholars Project works with natural scientists, social scientists, and philosophers who want to communicate their ideas to broad audiences.

We’re back! From 2021 through 2026, Beyond the Ivory Tower held 15 workshops at Northeastern University, building on six earlier workshops. With a new grant from the John Templeton Foundation, the Public Scholars Project will host ten workshops over the next five years at Wake Forest University.

Applications are now open for our June 18–19, 2027 writing workshop at The Graylyn Estate in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, hosted by Wake Forest University. Participants should plan to arrive Thursday, June 17, 2027. Applications are due by the end of Friday, March 12, 2027, anywhere in the world. Apply here.

The January 15–16, 2027 workshop at The Graylyn Estate is closed to new applications.

We also produce podcasts and videos and support an alumni community of scholars writing for public audiences. To hear about future workshops, resources, and opportunities, sign up here.
